How Long Should a VSL Be?

The most common question about VSLs has the most annoying answer: it depends. But it depends on a few specific, knowable things. Once you understand them, picking the right length is straightforward.

The rule that actually matters

A VSL should be exactly as long as it takes to make the sale, and not one second longer. Length is never the goal. Every second has to earn its place by moving the viewer closer to buying. A tight 6-minute VSL beats a bloated 25-minute one every time.

What lengthens a VSL

  • Higher price. A $19 impulse buy needs far less convincing than a $997 program. More money on the line means more objections to handle.
  • Colder traffic. Someone who's never heard of you needs the full story. Warm, retargeted traffic needs far less.
  • A bigger belief shift. If the viewer has to change what they believe before they can buy, that takes time.
  • A complex mechanism. If the "why it works" is the whole sell, you need room to explain it.

What shortens a VSL

  • Low price, impulse purchase.
  • Warm or retargeted audiences who already know the problem.
  • A simple, self-evident product.
  • Social-first placements where attention is measured in seconds.

Rough starting points

These are starting points to test, not laws:

  • Low-ticket e-commerce ($9-$49): often 2-6 minutes.
  • Supplements / mid-ticket ($49-$199): commonly 8-20 minutes.
  • High-ticket / info-products ($300+): frequently 20-40+ minutes.

The length isn't decided in a spreadsheet. It's decided by the audience, so you test it like everything else.

Watch retention, not the clock

The real answer lives in your analytics. Watch your audience-retention graph. Where do people drop off? That's a pacing or content problem to fix, not a signal to arbitrarily cut or pad. Trim the sections people abandon and strengthen the ones that hold.

Why length is cheaper to test now

Traditionally, producing a long and a short cut meant double the shoot and edit. With AI production, you can generate a long-form and a condensed version from the same project and run them against each other. Let the market tell you how long it wants to watch.

Frequently asked questions

What's the ideal VSL length?

There is no single ideal length. Match it to price, traffic temperature and offer complexity, then test. As a rough guide, low-ticket products run a few minutes and high-ticket offers often run 20-40+ minutes.

Are shorter VSLs better for cold traffic?

Not necessarily. Cold traffic usually needs more explanation, not less, but it also needs a stronger hook to earn that time. The opening has to justify the length.
